Disaster turns merry in the songs of Islands, a band from Montreal. At the Bowery Ballroom on Monday night, Nick Diamonds sang about car crashes, wild-dog attacks, volcanic eruptions and the aftermath of nuclear war.But the music bounced along, looking back to upbeat 1960’s folk-rock and psychedelia.
Diamonds usually strummed an acoustic guitar; two violinists sawed away at hoedown riffs or plucked pizzicatos; a keyboardist tootled the sounds of analog synthesizers; a bass clarinet underlined some oompahs. The music wasn’t strictly revivalist; one new song veered suddenly into another peppy style, Congolese soukous, with an Afro-Latin beat and gleaming guitar lines. But Islands’ arrangements kept the transparency of 1960’s pop, a world away from power chords or beatboxes, and audience members happily clapped along. The musicians were all dressed in white, as if proclaiming innocence and purity. Image Nick Diamonds, a vocalist with the Montreal band Islands, connects with the crowd at the Bowery Ballroom.
Hiroyuki Ito for The New York TimesIslands isn’t alone in its urge to return to sweeter times. Indie rockers keep mining the 1960’s, and Islands has a lot in common with the Elephant Six bands of the 1990’s, current psych-folk groups and their fellow homemade-sounding Canadian bands Wolf Parade and the Arcade Fire. Wobbly old synthesizer tones and thin, twangy vintage guitar settings still have a certain charm.

Islands’ debut album, “Return to the Sea” (Equator), often wanders toward loud electric psychedelia; it also has guest rappers on one song. But particularly onstage, Islands plays up its nerdy, perky side. Diamonds has a high, yelpy voice, and in one of the band’s encores, he acknowledged his debt to the Kinks by singing their “Waterloo Sunset” with a fine Ray Davies impression. When Mr. Diamonds isn’t singing about cataclysms, he often has nature in mind, particularly whales. “Swans,” envisioning life after death, envisions meeting someone in the belly of a whale. It’s impossible to tell whether cosmological lyrics pushed the band toward psychedelia or whether Islands’ fondness for 1960’s sounds led it to latter-day hippie visions.Still, the music isn’t as smiley as it might seem.

“Rough Gem” looked at death in diamond mines, while “Humans” imagined bands of post-nuclear-war survivors desperately trying to rebuild: “We’re fading to oblivion/No traces of civilized living.” Looking back to the buoyancy of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, the music was no refuge in the end.
